Germany & Europe's Governments of the 19th Century

German and European Government of the 19th Century

Over the past two weeks we have talked about the constant change in economy, social classes, military strategies and most importantly politics and government.  I was fascinated by the inconsistency that was occurring amongst the German states due to the constant separation forced upon them by the Austria and Prussia Governments.  However, after comparing notes from my 20th Century European History class I was intrigued to find out that throughout Europe especially in France similar problems were occurring.
The revolution’s that occurred in both countries brought very similar outcomes; France was in a political whirl wind that involved over throwing the thrown, killing their king, citizens declaring a revolution all to have a constitutional monarchy come into play in the years after King Louis IV’s execution.  Granted, like I just previously stated, that monarchy’s power no longer solely belong to the royal family rather it was a parliamentary system under a controlled throne.
In Germany similar chaos reigned throughout it’s states.  After the German citizens completed an almost completely non-violent revolution they were stuck with the task of forming a unified government that was represented by the people.  However, this idea of freedom was still split into two distinct groups, the liberals that consisted of white-educated nobility and were opposed by the conservatives who had the loyalty of the peasants  (majority of population) and wanted to protect the wealth of the Aristocrats.   What strikes me is the fact that in such a short period of time so many conflicts arose in trying to find a correct way to govern a country.  Although at this time Germany was not unified, there was still a strong sense of German pride but no way to collectively come together as a group of individuals and successfully rule themselves, which in turn led to most of the German states dissolving into either the Austrian Empire or Prussia.
